Man City will... not win the Champions League

As soon as the 1/8 Champions League round ended, Liverpool won a very important 2-0 victory on Arsenal's field, in… Premier League. The important thing is: this victory helps Liverpool to shorten the gap with the top team Man City to only 1 point, in a situation where people once thought that Man City was considered to have won the Premier League.

Saying that to see: although it is losing points, but Liverpool is better than Man City in terms of spirit, spirit, style... These are all details that show the terrible power of Liverpool, further confirming the position of the championship candidate. Champions League of this team, although the Champions League is not the Premier League. What is the common ground?

In the Premier League, observers admit Mikel Arteta's Arsenal just had a good game. People sobbed in praise of Gabriel Martinelli at Arsenal. But in short, Liverpool wins. They scored the important goal right after escaping the goal. And when there was a goal, Liverpool became solid, Arsenal had no way to find the balance again.

On the one hand, the title in the Premier League and the Champions League is equally important. Liverpool is facing a historic opportunity, so that if it "eats 4" this season, it will definitely have to be considered the greatest team ever, in the homeland of football. Therefore, Juergen Klopp's teachers and students must cherish every opportunity they have, neatly exploit each good ball, take advantage of every small opportunity. On the other hand, what has just been mentioned is the core detail, required to conquer the Champions League. Why is Man City not eligible to win the Champions League for the rest of his life? More importantly, why can't even Pep Guardiola help Man City to the throne? That's because Guardiola's Man City does not have the unique details that Liverpool have just shown.

Man City won the Premier League too easily, over the years. Just spread the money. And if not, spread more money. If Guardiola doesn't buy a good goalkeeper, he will buy a better one. He bought 3-4 top defenders in the world, still not done, then bought 1-2 more rock defenders. Just like that, more than 1 billion pounds in just 6 years - Guardiola himself has turned himself into a rich man as obnoxious as the Man City team "spending money on the temple". Because he was so permissive, Guardiola was no longer in the mood to realize his weak point to improve: his ability to coach in the game.

Reading and adjusting tactics right in the game is not a feature of a big, philosophical football team. That is the characteristic of small teams, must "whether the rice picks up the fish sauce", must think in each match, each ball phase. Guardiola's Man City is to be as epic as a winning machine, why wait and see and adjust in the game. They don't need that ability, nor do they have it. Of course, whenever there is a conversation, kicking a very strong opponent or kicking in a deadlock situation, Guardiola's Man City is not able to adjust the important places. It's been a feature for many years, it's not easy to fix!

Highlights Lille 1-2 Chelsea: Confirming Havertz's position

Chelsea beat Lille 2-1 in the second leg of the 1/8 Champions League round to win tickets to the quarterfinals. Here are a few notable highlights from this showdown.

#1 CHELSEA EXTENSION IMPRESSIVE BATTLE COURSE

Chelsea have now won the last 11/12 matches in all competitions. Their only ripple is the defeat to Liverpool in the League Cup final not long ago. At this time, Thomas Tuchel's teachers and students still have 3 clear goals to strive for, which are the English Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. Last season, Chelsea reached the final in both the FA Cup and Champions League, and they are well on their way to doing so.

#2 TUCHEL'S INCREDIBLE Cup ACHIEVEMENT

Coach Tuchel is owning an incredible record not only in the Champions League but also in other cup competitions. Last season, the German strategist brought Chelsea to the Champions League final and then won the championship. The previous season, he went to the last game when he led PSG. According to statistics, Tuchel has reached the final in the last 7 cup tournaments as head coach. In addition to the two Champions League seasons mentioned above, Tuchel also reached the final in the French National Cup, French League Cup (PSG), FA Cup, League Cup, Club World Cup (Chelsea). Chelsea fans hope Tuchel can continue to lead the team to the final of the FA Cup and Champions League this season.

#3 JORGINHO FROM SIN TO HERO

Before Lille, Tuchel surprised Chelsea with a 3-5-2 formation instead of the familiar 3-4-2-1. This change ensures the Blues have one more man in midfield compared to Lille's 4-4-2 formation. Jorginho became the focus of the game as he played a role in both goals in the first half. In Lille's opening goal, the Italian midfielder carelessly let the ball touch his hand, costing Chelsea a penalty. However, Jorginho redeemed himself with a superb pass for Christian Pulisic to equalize in injury time.

#4 CONFIRM HAVERTZ POSITION

Currently, the question of who deserves to lead Chelsea's attack may have been answered, which is Kai Havertz. It is not surprising that coach Tuchel continues to put his faith in the German star, because he has scored 5 goals in the last 5 matches. Before that, Havertz had only 6 goals in his first 44 Premier League games, but over time, he has completely transformed. Now, Havertz is becoming Chelsea's undisputed choice of center forward, knocking Romelu Lukaku to the bench. Havertz possesses the ability to move intelligently, timing and delicately handling the ball, completely outperforming a bulky, ineffective Lukaku.

#5 CHELSEA'S WINNER PROBLEM

Before Lille, both Ben Chilwell and Reece James were absent, forcing coach Tuchel to use Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta instead. Sometimes, Saul Niguez was also pulled by the German military leader to the left wing, but everything was just a fire. Obviously, Chelsea needs a solution in this position when Alonso was given many opportunities but did not meet the requirements, and Chilwell did not know when he would return.

Why is Arsenal happy when MU is eliminated from the Champions League?

Man United's defeat to Atletico cost England a representative in the Champions League but it was a joy for Arsenal.

Losing 0-1 to Atletico at Old Trafford, MU was eliminated from the 1/8 round of the Champions League. What does this have to do with Arsenal?

It's actually quite relevant. Currently, Arsenal is the team with the best chance of finishing the season in 4th place, which means a place in the Champions League next season. This will be a huge achievement for Mikel Artete's teachers and students if they know that the last time they attended this playground was in 2017.

However, since 2013, UEFA has stipulated that each member federation is only allowed to have a maximum of 5 clubs participating in the Champions League. So it will happen that if MU wins the Champions League and West Ham win the Europa League, these two teams will automatically have tickets to the Champions League next season, regardless of whether their position in the Premier League is outside the Top. 4 or not.

If that happens, MU, West Ham will join the top 3 teams in the Champions League, and the 4th team, Arsenal will have to go down to the Europa League. Now, that small risk is gone and the Gunners have complete control of all decisions in their hands.

At the moment, Arsenal are 1 point ahead of MU and have played less than 3 matches. The chance for them to finish in the Top 4 is very much. However, the road ahead is still very difficult. On tonight, the Gunners will have to welcome superpower Liverpool at home.

Not stopping there, Arsenal's schedule is still full of pitfalls with great battles against Chelsea and a direct confrontation with MU.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Man City result: Blue Man's disastrous fall

In the latest match in the 29th round of the Premier League between Crystal Palace and Man City, Pep Guardiola's teachers and students were powerless to penetrate the home team's net, thereby creating a great opportunity for rivals Liverpool to narrow. difference down to 1 point.

With the superior quality of the squad, Man City quickly imposed the match on Palace. The first opportunity came to the visitors in the 14th minute, when goalkeeper Vicente Guaita caught the ball after Kevin de Bruyne's long shot. Bernardo Silva had the opportunity to rush into the mud, but he handled it very poorly.

In the following period, Man City continued to attack heavily, causing Palace to struggle to resist. In the 27th minute, defender Joao Cancelo fired a long-range cannon and sent the ball back to the home post. At the end of the first half, Riyad Mahrez corrected his technique with his left foot, but the ball narrowly missed the Palace column.

After the first 45 minutes, Man City held the ball to more than 70%, launched 14 shots, more than 3 times Palace but completely helpless in finding a goal.

In the second half, it was still a one-way match in favor of Man City. Knowing that he knew me, Palace pulled the squad down to "build a double-decker bus". The home team's defensive kick somewhat makes the strikers of Man City impatient. Quite a few opportunities were created by Man City, but Phil Foden, Jack Grealish or Mahrez were all inaccurate in the final situations.

The defense is tight, but Palace is not lacking in opportunities. They proved to be full of discomfort in quick counter-attacks thanks to the speed of Wilfried Zaha or Michael Olise. However, Palace lacked a bit of sharpness to kill Man City.

In the end, Man City was held to a 0-0 draw by Palace. This is the second time this season that Palace made Guardiola's teachers and students unable to score. In the first leg at Etihad, The Eagles even beat the Blue Man 2-0.

This disastrous draw did not make Man City lose the top spot in the Premier League 2021/22, when they still held the top of the table with 70. However, the Green Man opened a great opportunity for Liverpool to narrow the points gap. The score will be reduced to 1 point if you beat Arsenal in the match on March 17. Currently, Liverpool owns 66 points and plays 1 game less than Man City. The championship race is getting more dramatic than ever.

Squad

Crystal Palace: Guaita, Mitchell, Guehi, Andersen, Clyne, Schlupp, Kouyate, Gallagher, Zaha, Mateta, Olise.

Man City: Ederson, Walker, Laporte, Stones, Cancelo, Rodri, De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Mahrez, Foden, Grealish.

Liverpool shakes into quarter-finals thanks to being saved by... Sanchez

Liverpool were beaten at home by Inter but still won the right to the Champions League quarter-finals thanks to Alexis Sanchez's red card. But if they want to win, they need more than such luck.

Alexis Sanchez did the one thing that Inter didn't want the most. The Chile international was sent off for the Liverpool vs Inter match for an unwarranted foul on Fabinho that kept his side from coming back up against Liverpool.

The Red Brigade had a ticket to the quarterfinals but their journey was not as easy as most people initially predicted after a 2-0 victory in the first leg in Italy.

Liverpool had many moments of fear in the second leg, especially after Lautaro Martinez put Inter ahead in the 61st minute. At that point, Simone Inzaghi's side only needed one more goal to make it possible. forcing Liverpool to play extra time with him.

However, just 90 seconds after Lautaro's goal, Inter's hopes were extinguished. Sanchez was lucky to escape a red card in the first half when he kicked Thiago Alcantara in the calf. But his luck ran out after a rude collision with Fabinho.

Referee Mateu Lahoz had many incorrect handling situations in this match. But he was right when he pulled out a second yellow card for Sanchez.

Inter lost a member of their coaching staff in the melee that followed, while Sanchez had to leave the field to boos.

With only 10 men remaining, Inter's threat has lessened and Liverpool have felt more breathless for the rest of the game. Even if Mohamed Salah was luckier or Arturo Vidal didn't make a miraculous save from Luis Diaz's finish, the Reds would have scored.

Liverpool had to receive their third defeat in all competitions since the beginning of the season against a confident and equally qualified Inter. The Nerazzurri also played very well in the first leg but were unlucky when they had to lose 0-2. And in the second leg, they continued to not be smiling by the God of Luck.

The reality is that Liverpool had their own chances. The Kop has 12 shots on target with 3 hits the bar, 2 from Salah's feet and 1 time from Joel Matip. Meanwhile, Inter only had 6 shots on target.

However, Jurgen Klopp would want his team to be able to play better. They started both halves sloppily, and were certainly disturbed by Inter's aggression and pressing intensity. Sanchez, until before the red card, along with Vidal were the best performers.

Klopp has created a few surprises with Liverpool's starting line-up. He brought Thiago back immediately from a hamstring injury and gave Curtis Jones a starting spot. Matip is back in defense and Diogo Jota is back up front, with Ibrahima Konatae and Diaz on the bench.

Liverpool were no longer themselves. They pass the ball unclearly and are often caught in the middle of the field. Fabinho has struggled in midfield while the trio of Jota, Salah and Sadio Mane have not provided the usual threat.

Inter pressed on, making their fans extremely excited at Anfield. And when Lautaro opened the scoring, they really exploded. However, Sanchez ruined it all.

The Serie A champions had to stop but they can hold their heads high. Meanwhile, Liverpool won tickets to the quarter-finals with a lot of anxiety. They will need to do better if they want to go far in Europe.

Bukayo Saka leads the U21 star lineup in the Premier League

Since the start of the season, Saka has contributed to 13 Premier League goals for Arsenal, more than any player under the age of 21.

Saka continues to show impressive form

In Arsenal's suffocating 3-2 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road recently, Saka provided an assist for Odegaard to open the scoring before punishing Tom Cleverly's mistake with a goal to increase the score to 2. -1 for the away team.

Over 25 matches in the Premier League, the English midfielder has scored 8 goals and has 5 assists. With his contribution to 13 goals for the Gunners since the beginning of the season, Saka became the player under the age of 21 to contribute the most goals for the team. Even Saka's teammate on the England line - Phil Foden has only 7 goals and 3 assists for Man City since the beginning of the season.

Among the U21 players playing in Europe's top national championships, only Bayer Lverkusen's Florian Wirtz has more goals and assists for the team than Saka. Florian Wirtz has been involved in 17 goals for Leverkusen since the start of the season.

Not only Saka, but other young Arsenal stars are also having a memorable season. This season, Arsenal have had three players under the age of 21 score more than 5 goals in the Premier League (Saka, Martinelli and Smith Rowe). In Premier League history, Arsenal 2021/2022 is the fourth team to achieve this achievement, after Chelsea 2019-20, Leeds 1998-99 and Man Utd 1995-96.

Victory over Watford helped Arteta's teachers and students return to the top 4 (after MU and West Ham lost to Man City and Liverpool). Arsenal is currently the team that has a lot of advantages in the race to attend the Champions League next season when kicking less than competitors such as West Ham or MU.

Minamino 2.0? Why Yuito Suzuki could be the next Japanese star to shine in Europe

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder is impressing at Shimizu S-Pulse and has been attracting interest from clubs in Belgium and Scotland.

It’s fair to say that Japanese footballers have been making a big impression in Europe of late.

From Takumi Minamino to Takehiro Tomiyasu, the veteran Maya Yoshida at Sampdoria and the impressive Takefuso Kubo at Mallorca, to the exciting quartet of new arrivals at Celtic, the J-League is increasingly well-represented among the continent’s top leagues.

How long, one wonders, before the name Yuito Suzuki is added to the list?

The 20-year-old, who plays for Shimizu S-Pulse, has already been attracting interest from clubs in both Belgium and Scotland, and is likely to make the move to Europe at some point this year.

He has already earned his first call-up for the national team, training alongside the likes of Minamino and Kubo ahead of last month’s World Cup qualifiers against China and Saudi Arabia.

“An honour,” he called it, although he did not feature in the games as it turned out.

A skilful, versatile attacker, Suzuki idolises Kevin De Bruyne, the Manchester City star, and has been compared to Minamino on account of his dynamism, quick feet and eye for a pass.

Like the Liverpool man, he is capable of playing anywhere across the forward line, or as the third midfielder in a 4-3-3, though he views the ‘second striker’ position as his most comfortable.

"My strength is that I can play in any [attacking] position,” he says. “What is required of me is to receive the ball in the gaps of the opponents and link it to the attack."

That much was evident during the opening game of the J-League season, Suzuki scoring a superb goal and winning the player of the match award as Shimizu drew with Consadole Sapporo.

“I've missed a lot of shots, so I still need to score more goals for the supporters to recognise me,” he said after the game.

“It's only the first game and I want to keep working hard. I want people to see that my finishing in front of goal has improved this season.”

Born in the town of Hayama, in the Kanagawa region of Japan, Suzuki was initially on the books of Yokohama F Marinos as a youngster, but chose Shimizu, he says, because of “the atmosphere within the club” and because it has a reputation for producing good footballers.

Shinji Okazaki, a Premier League winner with Leicester, is among those to have emerged with S-Pa, who have also housed the likes of Freddie Ljungberg, Daniele Massaro and the great Brazilian showman Djalminha down the years.

Suzuki shares an agent with Minamino, who made the move to the Premier League with Liverpool a little over two years ago, and is keen to follow the example set by him and Tomiyasu, who joined Arsenal from Bologna last summer.

The importance of role models, he says, is huge.

He hopes to be involved when Japan take on Australia in a huge World Cup qualifier in Sydney next month.

Victory there would secure the Samurai Blue’s place in Qatar, while defeat would leave them needing to beat Vietnam in their final match, while hoping the Socceroos fail to defeat Saudi Arabia in theirs.

In the meantime, the focus will be on performing consistently for Shimizu S-Pulse, who finished 14th in the J-League last season but have greater ambitions this time around under Hiroaki Hiraoki, who replaced Miguel Angel Lotina, the former Villarreal, Espanyol and Real Sociedad boss, in November.

Deliver there, and Europe surely beckons for Suzuki.

Defeating Chelsea after 22 penalties, Liverpool won the League Cup

Having never won a domestic cup in more than 10 years, Liverpool won the title for the first time under coach Jurgen Klopp with a breathtaking victory over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final with 22 penalties.

Desperate to win the 4th trophy within 9 months, Chelsea marched to Wembley Stadium on the morning of February 28 with great determination. Even the blockbuster contract Romelu Lukaku had to sit on the bench when he was not in the best form, giving up the responsibility to two young teammates Kai Havertz – Christian Pulisic on the attack "The Blues". In the back line, "spider-man" Edouard Mendy is still trusted while goalkeeper No. 2 Kepa is "saved" in case both sides have to go past extra time.

In the opposite field, coach Jurgen Klopp continued to use Caoimhin Kelleher in the wooden frame after the excellent performances of this number 2 goalkeeper in the cup front. Only a slight change when Thiago Alcantara was named in the starting line-up but due to an injury during the warm-up, he had to make room for Naby Keita. On the "Red Brigade" attack, the trio of Luis Diaz - Mo Salah - Sadio Mane started from the beginning with the explosive promises of a powerful goal-scoring team.

The scoreline was almost opened for Chelsea in the 6th minute, but after receiving a pass from Kai Havertz, Pulisic shot the ball into the range of goalkeeper Kelleher. Liverpool started a bit slow but then quickly sped up, responding to the opponent with two consecutive finishes by Naby Keita and Sadio Mane 30 minutes in. Unfortunately for "The Kop" when their chance was neutralized by Mendy's outstanding performance.

An unlucky day for the strikers of both teams when Mason Mount alone missed up to 3 opportunities at the end of the first half and at the beginning of the second half, including a situation where the ball bounced off the goal post.

On the Liverpool side, midfielder Joel Matip once put the ball into the net with a header in the 67th minute but VAR refused to recognize the goal. Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz also could not beat the Chelsea defense in close-range shots.

Forced to strengthen the attack, coach Thomas Tuchel launched the duo Lukaku and Werner into the field. The pressure increased significantly and in the 78th minute, Havertz sent the ball over the Liverpool goal line, but Werner fell into an offside position earlier.

In the last minutes of official time, the two goalkeepers alternately worked extremely hard to save the home net against the fierce acceleration from both sides.

Entering extra time, Chelsea twice brought the ball into the net of Liverpool thanks to the goals of Lukaku and Havertz, but both were disallowed for offside. In the 119th minute, coach Tuchel used the last substitution to launch "penalty-taking expert" Kepa Arrizabalaga into the field, confidently confronting the penalty shootout. This is the most remarkable turning point of the match.

22 penalty shootouts is a hard-to-break record in English football history when all players present on the field of both teams successfully completed their kicks without a single mistake. It was the turn of the goalkeepers to step in and Caoimhin Kelleher from Liverpool took the free-kick brilliantly like a real striker with enough danger to beat his colleague Kepa. Stepping up to the last 11mm mark, Kepa hoped to shoot the ball straight into the sky, giving Liverpool the victory and League Cup title in the most unexpected scenario.

The championship marks the first time Liverpool have won the League Cup after more than a decade of waiting and coach Jurgen Klopp's teachers and students will definitely see this as a momentum step to conquer all the remaining fronts of the season.

Marcelo Bielsa's damning relegation admission after Leeds thrashed by Liverpool

Marcelo Bielsa has spoken openly about his concern regarding relegation after Leeds were hit for six at Anfield which leaves them three points above Burnley in 18th

Marcelo Bielsa admits he is concerned about the prospect of relegation after Leeds were hit for six by Liverpool.

The Whites are in their second season in the top flight having impressed upon their return to the Premier League.

This season though the Yorkshire outfit have not hit the same heights with injuries a major factor.

Nevertheless, their intense style of play is not leading to the same results it did 12 months ago under their Argentine coach.

Leeds sit three points above Burnley in 18th, but the Clarets have two games in hand, which has led Bielsa to be frank in his assessment of their predicament.

"My reaction is disappointment given the result we have obtained," he said after the Anfield drubbing.

Marcelo Bielsa is concerned about the possibility of relegation

"It has been difficult for us to adapt to the opponents and it has been difficult for us to get the ball to our forwards with clarity.

"We need to defend better and attack better - both things. We will fight to defend our position.

"The distances between the two teams we were never able to reduce them. In the second half we thought it would be difficult to play an even game but we wanted to prevent or avoid what ended up happening.

"A result like today you can't explain it with the absences.

"We are fighting relegation. Of course, it worries me, how is it not going to?"

Leeds were 3-0 down at the break after Mo Salah had twice scored from the spot.

Sadio Mane grabbed a brace in the second half with Virgil van Dijk making it 6-0 late on.

Whites midfielder Adam Forshaw referenced the notable absentees in the starting XI with Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford both out injured.

Nevertheless, he admitted the manner of the defeat was likely to linger, insisting it isn't something that the players easily get over.

Liverpool smashed six past the Whites at Anfield

"Two different teams in class," he confessed.

"It is difficult coming to a place like this but we are missing big players, we have missed them through the season.

"Tonight feels like the end of the world but we are still in an OK position, we can't feel sorry for ourselves.

"It is hard not to let it affect you, I won't lie but the positives were the fans, they make you proud and that is what we can take from tonight, they are always there for us."

Leeds take on Tottenham at Elland Road this weekend.

Ex-Red expects AFCON heartache to give Mo Salah ‘more hunger’ for silverware

Former Liverpool star Michael Thomas has discussed how Mo Salah will react to AFCON heartbreak after his Egypt side were defeated by a Senegal side featuring Reds teammate Sadio Mane in the final.

Thomas has claimed that the Egyptian King is the player he is today due to his ability to respond to setbacks.

“Salah is world class! He hasn’t become the player he is today because he sulks about what could have been,” Thomas told Caught Offside.

“He will be disappointed just as anyone else, but I expect him to come back with even more hunger to get his hands on some silverware.”

Jurgen Klopp’s side remain in contention for four different trophies this term, beginning with the Carabao Cup final on February 27 against Chelsea at Wembley.

Liverpool decided to strengthen their squad in the recent transfer window when they signed Colombia international Luis Diaz from Porto – many Reds fans are now claiming that Klopp has the strongest squad at his disposal since he arrived at Anfield back in 2015.

Key players, including Harvey Elliott, have returned from injury and can now showcase their talent as Liverpool look to end the season strongly.

“He (Diaz) is an extremely skilful and direct player,” Thomas said.

“He can score and create goals whilst having a great work ethic. It was a great piece of business from the club and I cannot wait to see him on the pitch. The fans are going to be in for a real show.

“What a head that young boy (Elliott) has on him. To go through such an injury at a young age and come back with the hunger and desire that he has is simply amazing. He has an abundance of traits to his game and we will soon see him back to his best with time and more minutes under his belt.”

Thomas also looked ahead to the summer transfer window and named Jude Bellingham as one player Klopp should be interested in bringing to Merseyside.

The 54-year-old also claimed that he’s surprised that the Reds don’t appear to be interested in West Ham’s Declan Rice but did admit that the England international may be ‘too similar to Fabinho’.

“Both are really talented players but with a different set of skills,” he said.

“If I had control of the kitty I would sway more to Bellingham as he really looks a generational talent and has that something different going into the final third.

“Rice is a very good player but I think maybe a bit too similar to Fabinho.”

Hot English Premier League: Tottenham fell, MU - Arsenal benefited

The loss to Wolves made Tottenham "shoot themselves in the foot" in the race for the top 4 in the Premier League.
On the evening of February 13, the Premier League took place the remaining matches of the 25th round. Tottenham and West Ham were forced to win the top 4 race, but both London teams could not achieve the set goals.
At home, Tottenham was suddenly defeated by Wolves with a score of 2-0. The two goals of the "Rooster" came after only 18 minutes of rolling the ball, Jimenez and Dendoncker were the two players who scored to bring victory for the "Wolves". This was the third consecutive defeat of coach Antonio Conte's teachers and students in the English Premier League. This defeat also caused Tottenham to be pushed down to 8th place by Wolves themselves.

And in the latest match of the 25th round of the Premier League, West Ham and Leicester created an attractive score chase until injury time. Bowen opened the scoring for the "sledgehammer" but Tielemans and Pereira scored in turn to put the "Foxes" in the lead.

But right in the first minute of injury time of the second half, Dawson's shoulder fixed the score at 2-2. With 1 point won, coach David Moyes and his team are still fourth in the rankings, 1 point more than MU but have played more than 1 match. If they win the match in the middle of next week, the "Red Devils" will return to the top 4 leading teams.

In this round of 25, Arsenal did not play because their opponent Chelsea was busy playing the FIFA Club World Cup. The "Gunners" are currently 2 points behind the fourth-placed team West Ham but still have 3 matches in hand. Therefore, coach Mikel Arteta's team is currently the team that holds the biggest advantage in the race to win tickets to the Champions League next season.

In another development, Liverpool beat Burnley 1-0 with Fabinho's only goal. This victory helps "The Kop" get 54 points, 9 points behind the leading team Man City, but coach Jurgen Klopp's teachers and students still have 1 match in hand. Although the distance is quite far, but Liverpool is the only team that makes the race to win the Premier League still worth watching.

Liverpool 2-0 Leicester: Diogo Jota scores twice as Reds keep slim Premier League title hopes alive

Match report and free highlights as Liverpool cut the gap to Manchester City to nine points with a 2-0 win over Leicester; Diogo Jota scored twice for Jurgen Klopp's side; Mohamed Salah appeared as a substitute after his AFCON exertions

Liverpool kept their slim title hopes alive as Diogo Jota's double secured a commanding 2-0 win over Leicester at Anfield.

Jota turned home from close range after Kasper Schmeichel had parried Virgil van Dijk's header (34), then fired in from a Joel Matip pass (87) to seal the win and put Liverpool back within nine points of leaders Manchester City with a game in hand.

The Reds were without Sadio Mane following his late return from the Africa Cup of Nations while Jurgen Klopp resisted the urge to start Mohamed Salah, who was named on the bench following Egypt's defeat to Senegal in Sunday's final.

But Jota stepped up again in their absence, taking his goal tally for the season to 17, while there was also an impressive Premier League debut from Luis Diaz, their January signing from Porto.

Salah did emerge from the bench in the second half, receiving a rapturous ovation from the Anfield crowd before striking the woodwork with a curling effort and twice seeing Schmeichel deny him on other occasions.

It was Jota's night, though, his second goal coming after Liverpool had missed a succession of chances and confirming a fifth consecutive home win in the Premier League which leaves Leicester, still reeling from their 4-1 loss to Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup on Sunday, in 12th place.

Brendan Rodgers' side defended resolutely for the opening half-hour and had bright moments in attack too, most notably when James Maddison's angled effort was superbly saved by Alisson after the Leicester man had exchanged passes with Ademola Lookman.

Player ratings

Subs: Tielemans (6), Iheanacho (6), Barnes (6).

Man of the match: Diogo Jota

But once again a set-piece proved their undoing as Van Dijk powered Trent Alexander-Arnold's corner goalwards, with Jota slamming home the rebound after Schmeichel's initial save.

Liverpool controlled the game from then on, with Diaz's speed and directness causing Leicester problems on their right flank, and the pressure on the visitors increased after Salah's introduction for Roberto Firmino on the hour mark.

The Egyptian suffered Africa Cup of Nations heartbreak with Sunday's penalty shootout defeat to Senegal but played like a man with a point to prove on his return to Anfield.

He was bravely denied by Schmeichel after turning away from two Leicester players in the box, and the Dane then pulled off an even better save when he raced through on goal after latching onto an errant pass by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Diaz spurned chances too, slashing wide from a Jota pass, then shooting too close to Schmeichel after Salah played him in on goal with a delightful through-ball on the edge of the Leicester box.

But Jota's clinical second, when he shot on the turn from Matip's pass, his effort too powerful for Schmeichel, finally broke the visitors' resistance and gave Liverpool the two-goal cushion their dominant performance deserved.

Klopp hails 'outstanding' Jota

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised Liverpool hero Diogo Jota afterwards, telling BT Sport: "With the first goal, when you are in a goalscoring moment, then you are there.

"That's exactly what's happening for Diogo at the moment. I'm really happy for him and it's really helpful for us.

Asked if he expected the Portugal international to become a goal poacher, Klopp added: "We had a sense that it could happen. Diogo was not a bargain, it was not as if we got him for free.

"But the first thing that was obvious about him was his potential that was there, the work-rate that he puts in - that was the most important thing.

"If you have that, then there is always space for improvement. He's still a really young lad so you have to make the next steps in the team with us where we create much more chances than, with all due respect, Wolves did.

"You need a bit of fantasy for that and imagination, but we really thought he would be an outstanding player. He was already when he came here but he has improved."

Rodgers: Leicester restored pride

Despite the result, Brendan Rodgers felt Leicester's battling performance restored some pride after their embarrassing FA Cup loss to Nottingham Forest.

"One-hundred per cent," he said. "I think tonight was not just about the result, it was about restoring pride.

"We saw the supporters at the end applauding the players off. They gave absolutely everything in the game." They showed some real moments of quality and we took a top team right until the end.

"It was much more like us. Tactically, we were good in the game and organized. We got into some good areas.

"My only disappointment was that we lacked that little bit of care and precision in the final third, otherwise we could have made more chances."

Anfield a fortress for Liverpool

Liverpool are the only remaining Premier League side yet to lose on home soil this season and have now won 11 of their last 15 Premier League games at Anfield, scoring at least twice in 12 of those games (34 in total).

Leicester have conceded more goals from corners (10) than any other Premier League side this season, while their tally of 18 conceded from all set-piece situations equals their number from the entire 2020-21 league campaign.

Liverpool striker Diogo Jota has netted 17 goals in all competitions this season, making 2021-22 his outright best goalscoring season as a Premier League player. Only teammate Mohamed Salah (23) has scored more goals amongst all Premier League players in all competitions this season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (23y 126d) tonight appeared in his 150th Premier League game for Liverpool, the youngest to do so for the club since Michael Owen back in 2002 (22y 134d). The defender has 43 assists to his name in the competition, a tally bettered by just six players after their 150th appearance.
