Frank Lampard blames individual errors for Everton’s rout by Tottenham

Frank Lampard blamed individual errors rather than tactical disarray or poor attitude for Everton’s 5-0 thrashing by Tottenham after another miserable away performance from a side that last celebrated a league victory outside Goodison Park in August.

In their last home game Everton restricted Manchester City to a close-fought and contentious 1-0 win, but in their last two away matches they have not produced a single shot on goal. In a one-sided match in north London they allowed Harry Kane to score twice while Son Heung-min, Sergio ReguilĂ³n and an own goal from Michael Keane completed a miserable evening.

“It’s night and day,” Lampard said. “Really good last week – discipline, game plan, work ethic. And we started the game well today. The first 15 minutes looked like I wanted it to, but the crucial part of Tottenham’s game as a counterattacking team is to find space behind you and the players were aware of that and didn’t deal with it. If you’re going to do that you make your own problems.

“The main issues were mistakes and bad defending for the goals. It wasn’t just the defensive situations – at the top end of the pitch we didn’t show enough. Even when we were in relative control we didn’t threaten their backline. There’s a clear discrepancy in home and away form, issues that were there before me and don’t take care of themselves overnight. But rather than being about home and away, if you make those mistakes you’re going to struggle. It’s important to remain positive but we can’t shy away from the mistakes we made tonight.”

Tottenham now go into Saturday’s game at Manchester United on a high, and knowing that victory would take them above their opponents in the hotly contested chase for the final Champions League place.

“It was an important performance tonight, a really good performance,” Antonio Conte said. “We scored five goals, we create chances to improve the final result, and I have seen that when we have more time to prepare, to play against us is difficult for everybody.

“From tomorrow we have to start to think about Saturday, a crucial game for us. I put this target to my team – we have to try to stay until the end, very close to the top teams. From my arrival to now we are stronger, and I think that we can fight for this target. It’s important to have this ambition. To finish in the top four for us would be like we won the Champions League, like we won the Premier League this season.”

Spurs’ 107th minute FA Cup boilover leaves manager on brink of axe

Middlesbrough produced another FA Cup shock to extend Tottenham’s long wait for silverware with a 1-0 win after extra time at the Riverside on Tuesday, while Manchester City eased into the last eight with a 2-0 victory at Peterborough.

Boro knocked out Manchester United at Old Trafford in the fourth round and the Championship side were worthy winners to condemn Spurs to another trophy less season.

Not since a League Cup win in 2008 have Tottenham lifted a trophy and another hugely disappointing defeat poses further questions over the future of manager Antonio Conte.

The Italian only took charge in November, but has already hinted he could walk away after a run of four defeats in the past six Premier League games.

“We have to give our best for the rest of the season then we will see what is our position and the evaluation of our season,” said Conte. “It is early to say something about this.”

Teenager Josh Coburn came off the bench to score the only goal with a thumping finish across Hugo Lloris in the 107th minute.

“In between the win at Manchester United and here we got turned over at Barnsley. Football is a ridiculous game,” said Boro manager Chris Wilder. “The supporters gave us the energy to produce a top performance.”

Wilder’s men might not have been forced to play the extra 30 minutes had Matt Crooks connected with a free header from a corner.

Harry Kane did have the ball in the net for Tottenham only to be flagged offside.

But the England captain may also be again considering his future as he waits to win the first major honour of his career.

Middlesbrough were by far the brighter side in extra time and got their reward when Coburn rifled across Lloris from Crooks’ through ball.

Earlier, Oleksandr Zinchenko captained City as classy finishes from Riyad Mahrez and Jack Grealish sent the English champions through.

Ukrainian international Zinchenko took the armband in his first appearance since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Fernandinho had initially been listed as City skipper for the tie, but the Brazilian, who signed from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk, offered the role to Zinchenko in a show of solidarity.

“It’s not an easy period for Oleks. His family, his country but playing football is the best for him at the moment,” said City boss Pep Guardiola.

Zinchenko and Peterborough captain Frankie Kent held a Ukrainian flag together as they led the teams out at the start of the match.

Once the action got underway, Guardiola’s men took time to make the breakthrough against a side sitting bottom of the Championship.

Mahrez took his tally for the season to an impressive 19 goals in just 32 appearances as the Algerian cleverly guided the ball into the far corner from a narrow angle on the hour mark.

Grealish has had a far less productive season since his £100 million (A$184 million) move from Aston Villa.

But he marked his return from injury with a sublime touch to control Phil Foden’s long through ball before slotting past Steven Benda for his fourth City goal.

“While we were on the coach on the way to the game, I was sat next to Phil and we were scrolling through videos of (Lionel) Messi,” said Grealish.

“After scoring he came up to me and said it was just like we were watching.”

Crystal Palace also booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 2-1 win over Stoke.

Cheikhou Kouyate and Jairo Riedewald struck for the Eagles either side of Josh Tymon’s equaliser.

Rangnick: 'The plan was in the trash after only 7 minutes'

Coach Ralf Rangnick made a very strict assessment of the first half performance of Man United players in the 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the 1/8 Champions League round last night.

According to coach Rangnick, all his plans were thrown into the "trash bin" after only 7 minutes of the ball rolling because of a very early goal from striker Joao Felix. The German strategist was satisfied with the final draw, but completely disappointed with the way the team played in the first 45 minutes.

"After seven minutes, we were 1-0 down and the plan was in the trash. What we showed in the first half, I still can't believe it. We played unconvincing, not aggressive. and that's why we have difficulty," coach Rangnick shared.

"The second half we played better, had more possession in the important areas and if we had played 10 more minutes we could have won. We had to play better in the first half. Overall I was very disappointed by the performance in the first half.

When we competed for the ball and when we had the ball, we were too afraid to take risks. We need to do what we've been doing in the last few weeks and for a team like Atletico we need to go deeper. The way we scored the goal was exactly that, a run from Anthony Elanga, a great pass. We won the ball in the middle of the pitch, and this is how we have to play against them," added the German strategist.

As you know, the great battle between Atletico Madrid and Man United last night ended with a 1-1 draw. This is a relatively lucky draw for Man United, because the Wanda Metropolitano home team is the better player and unlucky to be able to score more goals when there are 2 situations where the ball finds the right crossbar.

Manchester United one of the best teams in world football, says Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone

La Liga champions Atletico host Man Utd in Champions League last-16 first leg on Wednesday; first European meeting between two sides since 1991/92 Cup Winners' Cup; Fred calls for long-term plan at Man Utd amid 'strange' decision to appoint interim boss

Diego Simeone believes Manchester United are one of the best teams in the world right now, with the Atletico Madrid manager saying it is difficult to find weaknesses in Ralf Rangnick's side.

United are in the Spanish capital for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against the reigning La Liga champions at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Atletico are long since out of the domestic title race like visitors United, who brought in Rangnick as interim manager following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's exit in November. United are a work in progress, but Simeone has been impressed by them.

"We're facing one of the best teams in the world in the last 14 games, if I'm not mistaken," Simeone said. "They've just lost one. With the new manager, Ralf Rangnick, it's given the team solidity, teamwork, commitment.

"We can see what Manchester United was always like. They've evolved since the new manager arrived, they're already fourth in the league.

"It's an intense, dynamic team, very brave, with very good forwards, very good footballers overall and who try to make a huge effort to try and unite the huge talents they have in 11 players.

"It's going to be a very difficult game, as every Champions League game is. But we have a lot of anticipation to play in our stadium in front of our fans and we're lucky to play the last 16 at home because we couldn't play that, we couldn't do that last year."

Atletico were hit on the eve of the game by news captain Koke will miss the first leg against a side that Simeone talked up during the pre-match press conference.

"The team is much more compact, it's stronger," the Argentinian said. "They have a solidity at the back, they're a very physical team with the central defenders and the midfield they've got.

"They are really strong and it's really, really difficult to find vulnerabilities there.

"I always assess the virtues of our rival, but of course we will try to find a way to try and hurt them, try and find our way to the goal, if you like."

Fred finds interim manager role 'a bit strange'

Fred has expressed concerns about Manchester United's long-term planning, admitting "it is a bit strange" to be under an interim manager for the rest of the season.

Rangnick was handed the reins for the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the German moving into a two-year consultancy role with the club at the end of the season.

"It is a bit strange," the midfielder told TNT Sports Brazil. "I know in football it's important to get good results as soon as possible, but it's also important to have a long-term plan.

"I think it's a little bit bad for us not to have one, at the moment it's all about the short-term goals. We don't know how it's going to be after the end of this season."

Fred's comments come as United face up to the prospect of another trophyless season unless they upset the odds and go all the way in the Champions League.

Asked if it is crazy to picture United winning this Champions League this year, Fred said: "I don't think so.

"I know we're not playing our best football, but we have a lot of quality names in our squad. I see many other teams playing far off from their best as well.

"[To win it] wouldn't be crazy, it could happen, but we have to work our socks off because we're far away from being one of the favorites in this competition.

He added: "Every player that comes to this club wants to win titles. We want trophies but it's been a long drought.

"With all due respect to Villarreal, it was our job to win that Europa League final and we failed. It's about having better football planning at the club.

"If you don't want to win titles you don't deserve to play for Manchester United. We're still in the Champions League but let's see if we arrive better on next season to find our peak football."

Bruno: More identify under Rangnick | Unrest stories nonsense

Bruno Fernandes believes Manchester United have "more identity" under interim boss Rangnick and insists stories of dressing-room unrest are nonsense.

Rangnick replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November and has overseen a recovery in the Premier League, with only Manchester City picking up more than the 25 points United have gained from 12 games under the German.

"We have to follow what the manager and staff think is the best way for us. Here at this club I have never heard anyone complain about the tactics and I hope no one would do," Fernandes said.

"That doesn't respect the coach's ideas because I think we have been doing so well since he arrived. We have more identity as a team."

He added: "I don't know what people mean by [these stories] honestly. I was doing an interview and they asked me about Jadon (Sancho) doing my celebration. I don't think that is something that is going in different ways.

"I saw the goal of [Maguire] and I'm seeing Paul (Pogba) behind him sliding on his knees. I was slapping [Maguire's] head and saying 'how can you score with that big head?'

"So, I think honestly it's just people trying to complain and make up stories about this club, because we know when someone talks about us they go around the world with their voice and that's something they want.

"For us, it means nothing. We stick to the plan and we stick together. That's the main thing - sticking together and winning together."

Man Utd receive fresh John McGinn advice after Sir Alex Ferguson recommendation

Manchester United's hunt for a midfielder in the summer transfer window should take them to Aston Villa's John McGinn, according to former England winger Joe Cole.

Manchester United would be wise to follow Sir Alex Ferguson’s advice and sign Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn in the summer transfer window, according to Joe Cole.

United will be on the lookout for a new midfielder at the end of the season and have been linked with many different players.

West Ham ’s Declan Rice, Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips and, most recently, Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans have all been touted as transfer targets at Old Trafford.

But McGinn is another possibility, having contributed three goals and two assists in 19 Premier League games for Aston Villa this season.

Legendary United manager Ferguson is a known admirer of McGinn and former Chelsea winger Cole believes he would be a good fit for the club, whose efforts, he feels, have been undermined by the feeling in the dressing room recently.

"Especially for Manchester United, you look at that club and you constantly hear noises about this player is unhappy because the manager said this and this player’s unhappy because he’s been given time here and he didn’t want it and all this,” he said.

"You just want lads like him through the door.

“First of all they have to be good enough, and he’s certainly good enough as a footballer. But that (attitude) is so valuable for a manager in the current climate.

“You know you haven’t got to mollycoddle him, he’s going to come in and do his job. He’s not an Instagram footballer, he gets on with it and does his job."

Manchester United’s links to McGinn started in 2019 following an interview with a club scout, who explained where the interest came from.

Bobby Jenks told The Athletic : “He’s up there with the best-performing midfielders in the division.

“Wait until he’s had a year at that level and then we can say more.

“What I do know is that Sir Alex Ferguson is wondering why Manchester United let a talented Scottish boy slip through.

“He’ll be keeping a close eye on him that’s for sure and if he continues the way he is, you can bet he’ll be telling his pals at United, too.”
