A brace in three minutes of striker Oliver Giroud in the second half helped Milan beat Inter 2-1 in the 24th round of Serie A, on the evening of February 5.
The Milan derby took place attractively, with a super-fast comeback, super products, scuffles, and red cards. Inter dominated in the first half and got ahead thanks to Ivan Perisic. But the game reversed in the second half when Milan regained the upper hand and took the lead thanks to Giroud's flash of light.
Tensions were pushed to a peak in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Theo Hernandez received a red card directly when he cut down Denzel Dumfries from behind to stop Inter's attack.
The victory helped Milan reach 52 points, shortening the gap with Inter to one point with one more game. Stefano Pioli's teachers and students can level the gap, or even surpass the opponent in the next round when Milan meets Sampdoria, and Inter encounters Napoli on February 13.
At Giuseppe Meazz, coach Pioli made four changes compared to the draw with Juventus in the previous round, all in the attack. Giroud started in place of the injured Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Support for the French striker is the trio of Rafael Leao, Franck Kessie, and Alexis Saelemaekers. Meanwhile, Inter only had one change from the last match against Venice, with Denzel Dumfries taking the main kick of Matteo Darmian in the right corridor.
Inter kicked better and created countless opportunities in the first half. In the 10th minute, Dumfries beat Hernandez in the air to tear Milan's net. But the goal was disallowed because Perisic was offside before the cross. A minute later, Marcelo Brozovic cut his left foot from outside the box. The ball hit defender Pierre Kalulu and changed direction, but goalkeeper Mike Maignan was able to catch up.
In the 25th minute, Lautaro Martinez made a wall for Nicolo Barella to volley in the penalty area to send the ball down the column. Two minutes later, it was Dumfries' turn to miss an opportunity when a corner kick in the face-to-face position failed to beat Maignan.
Inter's effort to force the pitch paid off 38 minutes in. Hakan Calhanoglu cornered the far corner to let Perisic volley diagonally across the table. This is the seventh time that Perisic has contributed to a goal in 12 Serie A games against Milan, with two goals and five assists.
In the first half, Milan's best chance came in the 35th minute, when Sandro Tonali fired a cannon from 30 yards, but was saved by goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.
In the second half, coach Pioli in turn launched Junior Messias, Brahim Diaz on the field, helping Milan prosper. In contrast, Simone Inzaghi's changes did not work as Alexis Sanchez and Federico Dimarco both faded. Even Sanchez himself lost the ball in the middle of the field, creating conditions for Milan to counterattack and equalize in the 75th minute. Brahim Diaz hit the foot of central defender Alessandro Bastoni, accidentally creating an assist for Giroud to cushion the ball in the far corner into the net. drum.
Three minutes later, the French striker continued to shine. Receiving the ball from Davide Calabria, he turned to eliminate Stefan de Vrij and cut his forte left foot to the far corner. Handanovic touched the ball, but could not save Inter. Giroud became the first French player to score a brace against Inter in Serie A and also helped Milan win their first Milan derby away from goal in Serie A, since February 2004.
